Saints are fortunate to skip this year's head coach carousel

5 days ago 2

With the Miami Dolphins moving on from Mike McDaniel, eight different NFL teams are now searching for a new head coach. And the New Orleans Saints are fortunate to not be part of that carousel. Whether or not you believe Kellen Moore can lead the Saints to a Super Bowl, they aren't hustling for interviews with coaches along with half of the other teams that didn't make the playoffs this year.

She probably didn't envision this, but props to Gayle Benson for overruled Mickey Loomis and forcing her general manager to dismiss head coach Dennis Allen in 2024. That decision started a domino effect that led to the Saints hiring Moore and his staff, drafting Tyler Shough and developing him into a viable starting quarterback. Imagine if the Saints had tried to run it back in 2025 with Allen after Derek Carr shut himself down for the year with an injured throwing shoulder? Where would they be right now?

Maybe it worked out. We never did see a healthy version of Klint Kubiak's offense for any sustained time in New Orleans, and his success with the Seattle Seahawks means he's emerged as a hot target in this year's coaching search. Maybe Kubiak and his staff could find a quarterback in the 2025 draft to develop (like Shough?), or they get Spencer Rattler playing his beset football. Maybe not. Maybe they start the 2025 season at 1-8 again and don't claw their way out of it. Then Loomis has to fire Allen anyway and the team has to fight with 25% of the league for a conversation with John Harbaugh.

It's a good thing we don't have to find out. Moore has his quarterback, a weak 2026 schedule, and a chance to get the Saints back to the playoffs. Hopefully they don't have to go shopping for a new coach any time soon.
