The NFL world was dealt a shock on Tuesday, as longtime Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced he would be stepping down from his position with the team. Tomlin’s decision has left everybody stunned, and that includes his former team, who were taken aback by his sudden resignation.
After years of rumors, Tomlin finally decided to pull the plug on his tenure with Pittsburgh. While the move has come as a shock, according to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, there’s a simple six-word message that can help explain why Tomlin felt it was time to move on from his longtime employer.

“As one source close to Tomlin told me recently…’what is there left to chase?’ Expect multiple TV suitors to pursue Tomlin this offseason,” Fowler shared in a post on X.
During his 19 seasons in charge of the Steelers, Tomlin accomplished pretty much everything that a head coach could. He never posted a losing season during his time with the team, and he helped lead them to victory in Super Bowl XLIII. Yes, the team plateaued in recent years, but Tomlin’s legacy is already set in stone.
This likely won’t be the last we see of Tomlin in the NFL, but for now, it looks like he’s going to spend some time away from football before determining what his future looks like. As for the Steelers, they will have to begin looking for a new head coach immediately, although it sounds like finding a replacement for Tomlin may not be as difficult as initially anticipated.
