The Los Angeles Rams are focused on beating the Carolina Panthers this weekend, and NFL rules prevent any teams searching for their next head coach from interfering with that. Teams can’t interview Rams assistants until after the wild-card round and the expectation is that plenty of requests will come in.
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula is expected to be a hot name for one of the seven vacancies but offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is someone to watch, too.

ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported on Wednesday that LaFleur’s name “keeps coming up” when he hears about offensive head coaching candidates. Additionally, pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase is “another name with some legit buzz,” though Schrager didn’t specify whether that’s for a head coaching position or as a coordinator.
LaFleur, 38, is in his third year as the Rams' offensive coordinator and though he doesn't call the plays, he provides value to McVay's staff. The brother of former Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, Mike could be next in line for a head coaching position at this point in his career.
Scheelhaase, 35, is also a rising candidate after receiving offensive coordinator interviews last year with the Jaguars and Buccaneers. McVay promoted him to pass game coordinator this season after he was an offensive assistant and pass game specialist in 2024.

McVay is no stranger to losing assistant coaches and this certainly seems like a year where he's in danger of having at least one or two poached from his staff.
