Numbers don't lie: Commanders were historically bad in 2025

1 week ago 2

To say it's been a disappointing season for the Washington Commanders would be a massive understatement. After going 12-5 and reaching the NFC Championship Game last season, the Commanders are 4-12 heading into Sunday's regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

There are many reasons why the Commanders took a nosedive this season. You could blame injuries, which is true, but every NFL team has injuries. Some of the concerns around this team heading into the season proved true. When you go from 12 wins to four, you have multiple issues.

Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic shared this staggering number:

That's quite the fall from grace, which is why so many Washington fans worry that the 2024 success was a fluke.

It's hard to win in the NFL. The 2024 season was no fluke. Much of last season's success came because of then-rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels covered so many of the team's flaws last season, including a poor defense and a lack of offensive playmakers outside of Terry McLaurin. Daniels was a cheat code on third-and-long and fourth downs. Washington's fourth-down success was historic and unsustainable.

A regression was to be expected. Not just for Daniels, but the entire team. The roster still had holes due to the previous regime's poor drafting. The team was old, with GM Adam Peters having to fill so many holes due to the aforementioned previous regime.

Then we get to Daniels. He battled injuries all season. Fortunately, none are serious and will not threaten his offseason, but each proved frustrating for him and the team. Add in McLaurin's injury, which cost him half the season, and almost everything went wrong for the Commanders in 2025.

What Daniels did as a quarterback is not a fluke. The truth is, injuries impacted his season, and he didn't have time to adjust to defenses adjusting to him. He needed reps.

Let's look at some more numbers, which highlight not only how bad Washington's defense has been, but also how the offense wasn't able to carry the team in 2025.

The Commanders averaged 28.5 points per game last season. This season, Washington has only scored 30 or more points once. That occurred in Week 3 against the Raiders, who are currently the NFL's worst team. On the other side of the ball, Washington has allowed opponents to score 30 or more points six times. The Commanders have allowed 27 or more points 11 times.

The numbers don't lie. It's been a historically ugly year for the Washington Commanders.
