Nighthawk girls rally to top Redhawks in OT

PERU — It was a hard fought win for Peru in its first game of the new year.

The Nighthawks rallied from seven down at the break to defeat Champlain Valley Union, 63-59, in overtime Friday.

Reese Duprey continues to shine as the season continues with a game-high 31 points to lead Peru. Duprey finished with a double-double as she nabbed 12 rebounds. Violet Berry added 16 to aid the victors.

The Redhawks were led by Zoey McNabb and her 30 points, 18 of which came from beyond the arc.

While CVU held the threes advantage 9-0, Peru was able to counter with a 15-4 free throw advantage to hold on and complete the comeback.

“I am incredibly proud of the performance we put on tonight,” Peru head coach Brittany Marshall said. “After a long game hiatus through the holidays, this was a challenging game to start back up with. CVU is extremely talented, and I thought we did a great job forcing them into outside shots late in the shot clock.

“Bella Berry did a great job as our floor general tonight, making some key passes through their press. I am very proud of our overall execution late in the game to force overtime, where we were able to end up finishing with the win.”

The Bobcats built a 31-11 halftime advantage and never looked back as they made things difficult for the Wolves to get into a rhythm.

Ava Moore led the way for NAC with 20 points, with teammate Zoee Cook adding 11.

NAC led by as many as 26 at the break and held SRF at a distance the entire contest.

Luke Moore led the Bobcats with 20 points as Shane Gilmore finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Teammates Kameron Chinchilla and Emmett LaClair added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Satins were led by Brian Shantie’s nine points as Chet Damon added eight.

MINERVA — Nick Sauer-Jones continued his hot streak with a double-double as the Irish Jaguars defeated the Orange in the opening round of the Section VII Division III New Year’s Tournament on Saturday.

Sauer Jones finished with a game-high 34 points and was a force on the glass with 20 rebounds. Aaden Sauer Jones got in the action with his first career double double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

JOHNSBURG — After defeating Keene in the other opening game, Wells continued its strong play to defeat Johnsburg/Minerva, 75-63.

With the win, the Wildcats took the 2026 tournament in a tightly contested championship that was tied at 36 at the break.

Chase Brooks and Hunter Passmore were a tandem for Wells, combining to score 61 of their team’s points. Brooks led the way with 40, including four three-pointers.

Nick Sauer-Jones attempted to go shot for shot with Brooks, finishing with 35 points. Aaden Sauer-Jones and Liam McKinney added 11 and 12 points, respectively.

ARGYLE — Greenwich made a combined 13 threes on its way to a 96-53 victory over Ti on Saturday.

Ryan Igber led all scorers with 29 points, including four three pointers. Michael Cronin added 13 as Colin Traver finished with 12 to lead the Witches to victory.

Brady Mydlarz led the Sentinels with 23 points, matching Ingber in threes with four made. Jackson Dorsett added 17 as it was hard for Ti to get into any rhythm.

Greenwich built a 49-25 halftime lead and didn’t slow down en route to the win.

Brady Mydlarz continued his exceptional play leading the Sentinels to their first win of the season over Lake George, 58-48.

Mydlarz had a game-high 27 points, making five threes, as Jackson Dorsett poured in 12 for Ti.

Richard Stroup led the Lakes with 22 points, and teammate Daniel Weaver chipped in 13.

Ti heads home for a two-game homestand beginning with AuSable Valley visiting Wednesday.

Moriah fell behind early and couldn’t get out of the hole they dug themselves in as it lost 56-46 to Stillwater on Friday.

The Vikings cut it to four midway through the fourth but couldn’t get over the last hump.

Rocco Schneller and Mason Wagner led the Warriors with 23 and 21 points, respectively. Wagner made key buckets to push the lead back to double digits in the fourth.

Wyatt Whitman led Moriah with 16 points as Joey Kazlo added 13. Bo McGinness was all over the scorebook with 10 rebounds, four points and assists, and three blocks.

“We dug ourselves a hole early with our defense,” Vikings coach Don Tesar Jr. said. “I am proud of our guys. They made the adjustments defensively in the second half, communicated better and ended up cutting the lead to four early in the fourth quarter. Stillwater was able to respond with a couple big baskets by Mo Wagner to get the lead back to 10.

“Stillwater is very well coached by Lilac. Schneller gave us fits in the first half, scoring 21 of his 23 points, and then Mo Wagner stepped up with 15 points late in the second half.”

Saturday, Moriah fell to Granville, 63-53, in the final day of the Argyle New Year’s Showcase.

The Golden Horde had three players reach double digits in Kole Pfude, Joel Nelson and Cam Rathburn. Pfude finished with 24, while Nelson and Rathurn had 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Wyatt Whitman led the Vikings with a game-high 26 points as Joey Joey Kazlo added 10. Austin Mandy and Kohin Sargent did the dirty work with eight and nine rebounds, respectively.

“Our guys played with a lot of heart,” Tesar Jr. said. “Granville had three kids really step up on offense with Kole Plude, Joel Nelson and Cam Rathburn. Granville was really tough on the defensive side of the ball and created a lot of pressure.

“We did a good job battling with Wyatt Whitman, stepping up and scoring 19 second-half points while we cut a double digit deficit down to four. We played two really tough teams down here for this tournament, and now we have to get back to work and be ready for league play again on Wednesday.”

PLATTSBURGH — It could have been from the line or from beyond the arc, but Franklin Academy found a way to defeat Saranac, 66-56, in the CCC Holiday Classic on Saturday.

The Huskies held a 13-5 advantage from the charity stripe while also winning from long range with seven makes to Saranac’s one.

Armani Richards and Carson Duffield led the Spartans with 10 points each. Duffield finished with a double-double with 16 rebounds. Henry added eight boards.

Three different Malone players reached double digits, led by Brad Poupore’s 18. Cameron Keating added 14, with Ryan Hessiltene adding 10.

“It was an exciting end to the Holiday Classic at Clinton Community College,” Saranac head coach Mike Recore said. “We were playing with some heavy hearts today, and I am extremely proud of how our kids stepped up and came together as a group to push through a difficult time. The game was a back and forth battle. Franklin Academy is a well coached and talented team.”

Plattsburgh played a strong defensive first half to put distance between it and Boquet Valley and continued the pressure to win, 37-15.

The Hornets built a 21-3 lead at the break, never allowing the Griffins to get comfortable.

Olivia LaMountain led PHS with 11 points, including making two Hornet three pointers.

Claire Reynolds led Boquet Valley with seven.

“This was a good team win for PHS with contributions made by all players,” PHS head coach Kelly Weiss said. “We had an outstanding first half defensively and were able to limit Boquet’s offensive looks at the basket.

“We need to continue to improve our offensive performance as we return to league play next week. “
