Longhorns expected to lose TE Jordan Washington to transfer portal

After two seasons with the Texas Longhorns, tight end Jordan Washington is expected to enter the transfer portal. The former four-star recruit entered his college career with high expectations but struggled to earn consistent playing time. Now, Washington will focus on finding a program that will bring out the best in his abilities.

During his time as a Longhorn, Washington played in 12 games. After redshirting his freshman year, the Langham Creek High Alum saw boost in playing time. This past season, the Houston native hauled in seven catches for 109 yards. He also found the end zone once and averaged 15.6 yards a catch.

While his sample size was small, Washington made the most of his opportunities. He was also competing for snaps with Jack Endries, who has declared for the NFL Draft. Had Washington remained with the program, he would have had to battle for playing time with Michael Masunas, whom the Longhorns earlier this week.

Although Washington's time with Texas is coming to an early end, he should draw interest in the portal. Coming out of his school, he was ranked as the 22nd-best tight end in his class by 247Sports. Before committing to the Longhorns, Washington had received offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Baylor, Cal, Mississippi State, Purdue, and Utah. Some of those schools could again be in the mix as the former Longhorn looks for a new home.

As Washington begins a new chapter, there are some things he needs to improve. That includes pass blocking and limiting drops. His struggles in those areas are partly why he fell behind on the depth chart during his time in Austin. If he can make progress in those parts of his game, he will be a weapon at his next stop.

With plenty of teams looking for help on offense, it will be interesting to see where Washington ultimately ends up and how he is used. He still has three years of eligibility remaining.
