Dan Lanning details what went wrong for Oregon in loss to Indiana

6 days ago 2

The Oregon Ducks only lost two games during the entirety of 2025, one of which came at the hands of the Indiana Hoosiers. Unlike last season, they will get a chance to redeem themselves in the College Football Playoff Semifinals.

The Ducks only lost by 10 points during their first matchup, and even that was a bit misleading, as a late turnover allowed Indiana’s lead to balloon. Dan Lanning has had a few months to reflect on the loss, and since the semifinals matchup was set up, he has been hyper-focused on correcting his team’s mistakes from that game.

“I think when games don't go your way, you're always trying to look for answers and reasons why," Lanning said of the October loss on Saturday. "And it's really simple. They blocked better, they tackled better, they moved the ball, and controlled the clock. They converted third downs, you know, it was all relatively close going into the fourth quarter, and then we turned the ball over.”

Coaches are conditioned to constantly assess and seek ways to improve, but it should be comforting for Lanning to know all those things went wrong, and Oregon was still right in it at the end. Back in October, the Ducks were still a young team trying to figure out their identity.

Now, they have gained a ton of valuable experience, and the offense is much more defined and varied in who gets the ball. The players will have to do the hard work, which is going out and executing, but Lanning and the rest of the staff know exactly what needs to be done to win this game.
