Could Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury be candidate for these two jobs?

1 week ago 2

Will the Washington Commanders need to replace two coordinators this offseason? Everyone expects head coach Dan Quinn to move on from defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., after replacing him as the defensive play-caller ahead of Week 11.

But what about offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury?

No, the Commanders aren't firing Kingsbury. But what if Kingsbury lands his second NFL head coaching opportunity this offseason?

There are currently two openings: New York Giants and Tennessee Titans. Unsurprisingly, each of those teams is currently slated to pick in the top five of the 2026 NFL draft. On Sunday, the 2025 regular season wraps up with the Commanders facing the Philadelphia Eagles. On Monday, there will be more head coaching vacancies when "Black Monday" arrives.

The Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals are other jobs to watch. Not all of those jobs may open, and there could be a surprise opening or two.

Back to Kingsbury. ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler named two jobs he believed Kingsbury could be a potential candidate:

Kingsbury's head coaching candidacy is interesting despite Washington's struggles. The Commanders rank 21st in total offense -- ahead of Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh -- despite a poor supporting cast ravaged by injury. He's a potential fit in Tennessee, with a young quarterback in Cam Ward who fits his style of offense. Las Vegas, should that job open as many around the league expect, will take a hard look at improving its offense. Kingsbury has been selective but is also open to becoming a head coach again. So while he's not the shiniest name because of Washington's record, I could see him being in the mix again.

People looking at Washington's stats will be deceived. Kingsbury has done an admirable job in 2025. He's on his third quarterback, a 39-year-old journeyman with 10 career starts. Kingsbury was the toast of the town last offseason. He wasn't a candidate for every job, but teams wanted to speak with him; however, he turned down any potential interviews to remain with the Commanders. Who could blame him coming off last season's 12-win campaign?

Tennessee and Las Vegas would be interesting destinations for Kingsbury. Tennessee used the No. 1 overall pick on Cam Ward. Ward struggled in 2025, but showed flashes. The Raiders may pick No. 1 in the 2026 NFL draft, and they desperately need a quarterback.

What would that mean for the Commanders? Washington hopes to retain Kingsbury. The Commanders feel like a team that could turn it back around in 2026 with a healthy Jayden Daniels and others. A new offensive scheme could provide a minor setback.

Whether he takes a job or not, expect to hear Kingsbury's name on the interview circuit. In four seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Kingsbury compiled a 28-37-1 record, making the playoffs one time.
