Caleb Williams Can Make Bears History in Week 18 — Here's What He Needs to Do

1 week ago 2

The growth that Caleb Williams has had under first-year head coach Ben Johnson this season has been great to watch.

Even though the Bears lost to the San Francisco 49ers 42-38, he still put up some solid numbers. He finished with over 300 passing yards for the first time this season, finishing with 330 and two touchdowns.

In the last two games alone, Williams has thrown for 490 passing yards and four touchdowns.

With his efforts from Sunday night, Williams set a new career-high in passing yards with 3,730, eclipsing what he had as a rookie at 3,541.

The second-year quarterback has a chance to make history in Week 18 against the Detroit Lions. If he passes for 108 more yards, he will tie the single-season record (3,838) set by Erik Kramer in 1995. Williams is currently third on the leaderboards for that milestone behind Jay Cutler (3,812) and Kramer.

He is also chasing the single-season record for passing touchdowns. The quarterback needs four more to tie Kramer's record for that stat from the same season.

Williams can make Bears' franchise history in one key statistic, however. He can become the franchise's first 4,000-yard passer if he has 270 yards in Sunday's game against the Lions.

Luckily for the Bears, the Lions are allowing the 12th-most passing yards per game (238.4).

What's even more impressive about the season Williams is having is that he's putting up these numbers with Rome Odunze being out of the lineup for the last few games. Odunze has missed time due to a stress fracture in his foot that he aggravated in the 24-15 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Odunze is the second-leading receiver for Chicago with 661 receiving yards and six touchdowns. The good news is that D.J. Moore and Luther Burden III have stepped up in his absence.

Moore has accounted for 173 receiving yards and three touchdowns since Week 14. Burden has really come into his own as of late, too.

Burden recently set a new season-high, with 138 receiving yards in the loss to San Francisco.

Williams and the Bears will probably be focused more on securing the highest possible seed for the playoffs rather than chasing these accolades, but it's still something to watch for as the regular season comes to a close.

Chicago and Detroit close out the season series on Sunday at 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.
