Smothers recently concluded his sophomore season at NC State and rushed for 939 yards and six touchdowns on 160 carries in 11 games. A 5-foot-11, 195-pound threat, Smothers also had 37 catches for 189 yards and a touchdown.

He totaled a season-high 164 yards in the Wolfpack's 34-24 win over Wake Forest on Sept. 11 in Winston-Salem and had four 100-yard rushing games in 2025. In his redshirt freshman season in 2024, Smothers had 89 carries for 571 yards and six touchdowns for Dave Doeren's team.

Smothers is listed as the No. 4 ranked player in the transfer portal according to On3 and the No. 2 running back. Listed as a four-star recruit by On3 in the class of 2023 out of Charlotte, North Carolina, he originally committed to Oklahoma. Across parts of three seasons, Smothers has rushed for 1,552 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Alabama could sure use him. The Crimson Tide's struggles in the run game in 2025 were well-chronicled; they placed 15th in the SEC in average rushing yards per game with 104.13.
