The Republic's girls soccer Super 10 (Jan. 6):

1. Queen Creek Casteel (3-0)

Last year’s Open runner-up only played three times before the holiday break, but has looked excellent with wins over Mesa (11-0), No. 4 Gilbert Highland (4-1) and No. 9 Anthem Boulder Creek (2-1). Looks like coach Jason Hammonds has the Colts primed for another deep playoff run.

2. Phoenix Xavier Prep (1-1-1)

The five-time defending state champions (Open and 6A) suffered a rare season-opening overtime loss to Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor before beating No. 9 Boulder Creek and tying with Chandler Hamilton. Despite the slow start by Xavier's standards, the Gators should still be considered one of the favorites to win the Open.

3. Chandler Basha (5-0-1)

The only game the Bears haven’t won so far is a 2-2 tie with California powerhouse Mater Dei.

4. Gilbert Highland (6-3)

Provided one of the signature wins of the season, beating No. 5 Gilbert Perry (1-0). Also has quality wins over No. 7 Queen Creek Crismon and Scottsdale Desert Mountain.

5. Gilbert Perry (4-1)

The Pumas haven’t played since the Dec. 15 loss to No. 4 Highland. Will look to get back on track against Mesa Mountain View this week.

6. Scottsdale Chaparral (7-0-2)

The reigning 5A state champions are off to another hot start, as three players have already scored at least four goals. A huge test is coming up this week against No. 4 Highland.

Chaparral Firebirds girls soccer head coach Robyn Carlson talks with her team during practice at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale on Jan. 23, 2025.

7. Queen Creek Crismon (8-3-1)

The Rattlers made a run out of 4A to the Open quarterfinals last season as the No. 22 seed, but won’t catch anybody by surprise this season as coach John Roberts has quickly turned this program into a top contender. Senior forward Sydney Droen (16 goals, 13 assists as of Jan. 6) is one of the most prolific players in the state.

8. Sierra Vista Buena (8-0)

One of the few undefeated teams remaining. Has beaten the defending 4A state champion Tucson Salpointe Catholic twice this season.

9. Anthem Boulder Creek (6-2-1)

Came out of the gate fast, with six wins in a week. Then lost consecutive games to No. 1 Casteel and No. 2 Xavier and tied with Desert Mountain. Takes on Surprise Valley Vista this week to try to rebound.

10. Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep (8-3)

Coming off making the championship game at the Holiday Extravaganza Soccer Tournament, where the Saints lost to No. 6 Chaparral. The Saints boast one of the top offenses in the state with 47 goals scored so far, second only to Crismon on this list.
