The transfer portal is officially open as players from all over the country will look for a new home over the next few weeks, changing rosters for the 2026 season. For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they have some big holes to fill after some departures.
Following a disappointing first season in the Bill Belichick era, North Carolina has to win in the transfer portal with additions. Like other programs, they probably will be moving fast and the latest news suggests that.

Per Tar Heel 247, North Carolina is set to host quarterback Billy Edwards for a visit. The former Wisconsin quarterback entered the transfer portal and is looking for a new home:
So significant, Edwards will be in Chapel Hill on Friday visiting with Bill Belichick and new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, multiple sources have confirmed to TarHeel247.
Edwards started Wisconsin's season opener this fall but suffered a PCL injury in that game. Rather than undergoing surgery, he opted for rehab and natural healing. He played just eight snaps in week four against Maryland before team doctors shut down his season.
Edwards has experience, starting for Maryland in the 2024 season and completed 273 of his 440 pass attempts for 2,881 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. With North Carolina returning Gio Lopez, they also lost freshman Bryce Baker to the portal, so they have a need for some competition at the backup spot.
