The Philadelphia 76ers had a miserable 2024-25 season as nothing went right for them. The Sixers were expected to contend for a championship with all of the talent they had on the roster, but injuries destroyed everything and they finished 24-58.
Even after such a disheartening season, they were not guaranteed to have a draft pick in 2025. Their pick was only top 6 protected or else it would go to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the Al Horford deal.

However, the basketball gods granted the Sixers the No. 3 pick and they used it to select Baylor star VJ Edgecombe. After the rookie nailed a game-winning 3 in Tuesday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies, and finished with 25 points, Tyrese Maxey was thanking those basketball gods for Edgecombe becoming a Sixer.
"We’re blessed to have him," Maxey told reporters after the win. "Super. Thank you, basketball gods, Lord, Baylor, I don’t know. Daryl Morey. Everybody."
Edgecombe scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. He's now averaging 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 42% from the floor and 37.4% from deep in 27 games thus far in his career. When considering he's only 20 years old, one has to wonder how far he can go. It's obvious he has star written all over him, but Maxey isn't going to put a cap on him.
"He’s 20. Let him figure it out," Maxey added. "I’m not gonna put a cap on him. People tried to put a cap on me and now we’re here. So, who knows? It’s up to him. How much does he want to work? Who does he want to become?"

As time goes on, Edgecombe is going to continue being this important piece to this group. The Sixers have star power in the form of Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George, but Edgecombe is going to be a key piece for this group's success.
