Texas A&M rises ten spots in the NET rankings after beating LSU

4 days ago 2

Texas A&M (11-3, 1-0 SEC) started SEC play with a thrilling 75-72 win over LSU (12-2) in Reed Arena on Saturday afternoon, as the Aggies continued to look like one of the most physical teams in the country, led by senior forward Rashaun Agee's 15 pounds and 11 rebounds.

This was the first game since it was announced that star transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako would miss the remainder of the season, leaving the Aggies with less size and forcing them to resort to "small ball" formations focused on guard play and efficient outside shots. This strategy isn't perfect, knowing that bigger teams, including LSU, could take advantage of the size differential in the paint.

However, head coach Bucky McMillan's pressure defense led to 8 steals. Texas A&M's defense forced 16 turnovers, including two key steals in the final minute to take the lead, which should excite Aggie fans, knowing this effort should continue throughout the regular season.

Shooting 42% from the field, the Aggies hit eight three-pointers, including sharpshooter Ruben Dominguez's four makes from deep that kept LSU from taking the lead until late in the game. In contrast, the consistent outside threat will keep McMillan's squad in nearly every game this season.

The name to watch moving forward is senior reserve guard Ali Dibba, who scored 12 points, shooting 5-7, including two three-pointers, providing an instant spark off the bench. If Dibba is finding his stride, Texas A&M's postseason hopes may not be as far-fetched.

After the win, Texas A&M rose ten spots in the NET rankings to No. 55, and while this isn't a strong ranking by standards, it's clearly a step in the right direction before the Aggies face Auburn on the road on Tuesday night.
