Texas A&M is hosting Tulsa transfer linebacker this weekend

1 week ago 2

Texas A&M's 2026 linebacker rotation will more than likely feature one or two veteran additions from the transfer portal, as senior LB Scooby Williams declared for the 2026 NFL Draft earlier this month, while junior linebacker Taurean York has yet to announce if he'll return for a final year or also declare for the draft.

On paper, senior Daymion Sanford and sophomore Noah Mikhail are the following players in line to take a majority of the linebacker snaps. If York does return, head coach Mike Elko must land an experienced transfer linebacker to help fix an Aggie run defense that directly resulted in both losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

More importantly, finding a linebacker that either matches or exceeds Scooby Williams' 6'2" frame would be ideal, as Sanford and Mikhail don't possess the size needed to stop physical rushing attacks consistently, but should add more size this offseason after working with S&C coach Tommy Moffitt.

Help could be on the way, as 247Sports analyst Tom Loy reported on Saturday that standout Tulsa transfer linebacker Ray Coney, who recorded an eye-popping 128 tackles last season, paired with two sacks, is currently visiting Texas A&M this weekend, while visits to Florida State, Purdue, and Virginia are also on the docket.

Standing at 6'2" and 240 pounds, Coney would be a plug-and-play option in the middle of Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill, while new LB coach Travis Williams would have a solid group to work with during his first season with the program.

According to Pro Football Focus, Coney finished the 2025 season with prolific grades, including an 86.3 run defense mark and a 74.5 pass rush grade.
