Stone girls lose, but still showing improvement

The Stone Memorial girls were outscored 30-24 in the second half of their game with Lipscomb Academy earlier this week in the Music City Hoopfest in Nashville.

Stone trailed by one at halftime only to watch Lipscomb come rolling back and lead by six after three quarters before claiming the 54-49 victory over the Lady Panthers.

The game went back and forth early as Stone got baskets from Lauren Clark, Ashley Whittenburg and Emma Smith to grab a 13-12 advantage after the first eight minutes. Lipscomb was paced offensively by Ava Jarrett.

Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the second period.

Blake Maple came on strong for Lipscomb, but Stone got a jumper by Ashley Whittenburg and another by Lexi Clark to maintain its lead. The Lady Panthers led 25-24 at the intermission.

Lipscomb picked up the pace in the second half and created some separation. Maple scored inside and Jarrett hit a 3-pointer.

Stone got baskets from Ella Jane May, Whittenburg and Emma Smith and the Lady Panthers could get no closer than 40-34 heading into the fourth period.

Lexi Clark led Stone in scoring with 19 points. Whittenburg tallied 14 points, while Lauren Clark had nine and May scored four.

Emma Smith chipped in with two, and Caitlyn Smith had one.

Jarrett led Lipscomb Academy in scoring with 17 points. Maple scored 11, and Macey Hunter chipped in with five.

The Music City Hoopfest ended Dec. 31.

Stone will be back on the court Jan. 9 when it will host district foe Livingston Academy. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Slow start

A slow offensive start for the Stone Memorial Panthers proved costly. SMHS scored four points in the first period and only 10 in the first half as the Panthers fell 57-44 to Ravenwood earlier this week in the Music City Hoopfest in Nashville.

Stone did come back with a surge in the second half. Briggs Lowe and Jack Cordell caught fire for the Panthers, helping Stone cut into the Ravenwood lead. A basket by Evin Moseley and another one by Hunter Haney brought the Panthers to within 12 at 39-27 as the third period came to a close.

Lowe and Cordell led Stone in scoring with 15 points each. Haney added four points, while Moseley and Charlie Vanwinkle scored three each. Tanner Bowman and Noah Potter scored two points each.

Sean Stephens led Ravenwood with 10 points. Matt Nova and Brad Weismer scored seven points each.

The Panthers will be back on the court Jan. 9 when they host district foe Livingston Academy. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
