Sean Payton wants scoreboard operator to keep Broncos fans on task

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is looking for a focused environment on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Man, I sure hope so," said Payton on if fans will create a playoff atmosphere on Sunday. "I say this, I’m not being critical, but earlier, earlier... No shell games on the scoreboard, no follow the Bronco head or anything. Let’s get this. When they’re getting in the huddle — deafening. That’s the 12th man. That truly… There could be no better one. [Texas] A&M coined that phrase, and then the Seahawks bought it from them. It really fits."

Early in the season, Payton praised Broncos fans for their full-throated support of the team in multiple games. Denver faithful have also been a force to be reckoned with on the road in 2025, creating a mini-home field advantage in several stadiums across the league.

Ironically, this is not the first time Broncos players or coaches have had an issue with the stadium scoreboard operator. In 2014, Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning took issue with the scoreboard operator while he was on offense, and told reporters, "I've got to have a little talk with him." Shortly thereafter, it was nearly silent when the offense took the field. That continued for a while, all the way up until the home fans had to chant down the play clock in order for the offense to run a play.

Now, Payton wants the stadium at a roaring level, the full power of the 'Rocky Mountain Thunder.' "That is what’s so exciting about this game, and then what a win in this game can do for the next couple games," said Payton. "Remember, granted we were in a dome [in New Orleans], but there are about four stadiums in this league that can be deafening. I think ours in the last, beginning of Green Bay, we heard it. They’re an active part if they want two more home games. No quizzes. No, ‘Did You Know?’ None of that. That’s stuff you do at the basketball games.”

Bring the Thunder!
