Kittle was carted off after suffering a lower-leg injury on catch in the second quarter of the 49ers' wild-card playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles, a bad sign for such an integral part of the team's offense.

Kittle dealt with a left ankle injury late in the season, but Sunday's injury appears to be unrelated.

Replay showed the reverberation mechanism in Kittle's right leg that is extremely common with Achilles injuries, indicating he could be in for a long recovery period that stretches well beyond the playoffs.

The 49ers have not yet made an announcement on Kittle's status, but the cart quickly taking him back to the locker room was another sign that there is no reason to expect him to return to the field.

Kittle suffered the injury on his first catch of the day as the 49ers, who were already without WR Ricky Pearsall on the offensive side of the ball, tried to make up a small deficit.
