Before the 2025 season kicked off, Oregon Ducks running back Makhi Hughes was expected to be one of the most impactful offensive performers on the team. But through one half against the Montana State Bobcats in Week 1, he logged just a handful of snaps during a two-minute drill at the end of the first half, as the Ducks nursed a 28-point lead.
That it took that long for one of the top-ranked transfer portal running back in 2025 was a complete shock to nearly everyone outside of the program.

Hughes began his career with the Tulane Green Wave, bursting onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in totaling 1,378 yards and seven touchdowns. His 2024 campaign was even better, as he scored 15 touchdowns and amassed 1,401 yards, also adding two receiving touchdowns.
But his 2025 stats with the Ducks are a completely different story, as he's carried the ball just 17 times for 70 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards, ceding play time to a loaded running back room featuring Noah Whittington, Jordon Davison, Dierre Hill Jr. and Jayden Limar.
Now, Hughes has entered his name into the transfer portal after just one season with the Ducks, per On3's Hayes Fawcett.
On Oct. 1, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning announced that Hughes decided to utilize a redshirt, as his true freshman season at Tulane was categorized as a medical redshirt.

Hughes will have two years of eligibility remaining, with this year on the Ducks not counting towards his four years of eligibility.
