The future at the quarterback position has been among the biggest talking points for the Oregon Ducks over the past months. Is current starter Dante Moore going to the draft or returning to Eugene for the 2026 season? If he does depart, who replaces him?

With those questions floating in the ether, head coach Dan Lanning isn't going to stop recruiting high school passers to come play for his program.

Class of 2027 four-star quarterback Will Mencl, who is currently preparing for the Navy All-American Bowl in San Antonio, TX, spoke to Rivals' Steve Wiltfong after a strong first day of practice.

Mencl listed Oregon, North Carolina, Auburn, Kansas State and Kentucky among the leaders in his recruitment.

"Any of those five schools, I don’t think there’s really a leader in the clubhouse right now, so there’s just not a rush to commit and just taking my process one day at a time," he said.

Mencl, a Chandler, AZ, native, is coming off a junior campaign in which he threw for over 3,800 yards and 33 touchdowns while adding over 700 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground.

At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he's currently the No. 25 quarterback and No. 370 player overall in the 2027 class, per 247 Sports Composite.

Speaking on Oregon's program: “I mean, you know, just it’s a brand," he said. "Coach Lanning does that program really, really well, and he always will run that program, and it’s just, it’s a player’s environment that everybody wants to be in, so it’s definitely awesome."

With uncertainty at the position in the future, it would aid the Ducks to add a quarterback like Mencl who can provide depth and talent.
