NFL Week 18: Chris Olave won't play in Saints vs. Falcons. Here's why

1 week ago 2

We've already seen the last of New Orleans Saintst wide receiver Chris Olave this season. NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports that Olave will not play in Sunday's regular season finale with the Atlanta Falcons after a blood clot was detected in his lung. It was fortunately caught early enough to be treated; Underhill added that Olave was discharged from the hospital on Thursday and is "doing well."

But we'll have to wait and see what the long-term impacts of this may be. Hopefully it's something Olave can manage with medication to prevent from being a problem for him in the future. He's eligible for a contract extension and is slated to play on his fifth-year option in 2026, valued at $15,493,000. Olave did a lot to maximize his value this year, especially once Tyler Shough took over as quarterback. He set new career-highs in receptions (100), receiving yards (1,163), and touchdown catches (9), bouncing back strong from a 2024 campaign derailed by concussions.

So who could be available at wide receiver in Atlanta? Look for Mason Tipton, Kevin Austin Jr., and Dante Pettis to be joined by a couple of players from the practice squad. Ronnie Bell was activated last week but either Samori Toure or Elijah Cooks may join him. If Shough can beat the dirty birds with such a depleted receiving corps, that would only strengthen his case for Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Saints' QB of the future.
