The Minnesota Vikings' season didn't go the way that they or many had expected it to. While their season has been somewhat of a letdown, they had to witness other players and teams around the league enjoy success with the riches they let walk away, specifically at the quarterback position.
Sam Darnold has the Seahawks playing for the number one seed in the NFC in Week 18. Daniel Jones was playing at an MVP-level before he suffered a torn Achilles. Meanwhile, they have had J.J. McCarthy take over and not have the start or consitincy they the team or he would had hoped for. In his absence, they have had to rely on Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer, who also have not been the most exciting options for this team.

All of that leads us to the point that Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer made about the Vikings and their outlook for 2026. He hints that the team is not far from contending, but they have to figure out the quarterback position.
He writes, "I looked up on Christmas Day and the Vikings, somehow, were 8–8, after beating Detroit with three net passing yards. To get to .500, given how their quarterback situation has played out with injuries and everything else, is remarkable. And I still think the franchise is in a really good place, if it can sort out the quarterback position (and get DC Brian Flores to sign a new deal)."
2026 will be make or break for McCarthy, and perhaps this Vikings' front office. They went all in on McCarthy while letting two Pro Bowlers walk away, and at some point, rent will be due on that decision if McCarthy doesn't pan out.
