Michael Strahan had hilarious reaction to Myles Garrett breaking sack record

After 25 years, the NFL single-season sack record that belonged to New York Giants Hall of Famer Michael Strahan (and T.J. Watt) was broken on Sunday by Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.

Strahan, now a host on FOX NFL Sunday, offered a lighthearted yet pointed reaction to seeing his mark surpassed.

"I mean, I hold the record for 16-game seasons. They don’t have records for 17-game seasons. That's the way it works out. You can't compare records from 12-game seasons to 16 and 17 games. It doesn't work," Strahan said during the FOX broadcast.

He then turned to praise the new record holder.

"But I look at it like this: there were always generations that I loved -- this young man is amazing. Absolutely amazing. And I know that he has so many more sacks left in him. He's 30 years old. I think I had just as many, if not more sacks after 30 as Bruce Smith, as Reggie White. I think he’s just getting going," Strahan said.

"He’s just finding his stride, and you don’t know how hard it is to do that on a team that isn’t always in the lead, a team that isn’t always competitive. I think that is the most amazing thing about him. He’s done it on a team where he’s the focus. He’s the guy who gets doubled and tripled every time, but it has never stopped him from going out there and putting up numbers year after year...

“This kid is amazing, and I really just want him to be on a team -- which hopefully will be Cleveland with a long-term deal there -- that wins and gives him the opportunity to have the ultimate thing in this game, a team game, which is a Super Bowl.”

Strahan set the previous record of 22.5 sacks in 2001, with his final sack coming against Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. The Hall of Famer later reached the Super Bowl and won a championship with the Giants in what is widely regarded as the biggest upset in Super Bowl history -- just as he now hopes for Garrett as the new record holder enters the second half of his career.

Strahan held sole possession of the record from 2001 until 2021, when Watt tied the mark. As Strahan noted, Garrett needed one additional game -- the 17th of the season -- to eclipse it.

Garrett recorded 13 sacks over a four-game stretch earlier this season, including a five-sack performance that positioned him to break the record on Sunday. Playing at his current level, he could threaten his own new mark in the future. As Garrett himself emphasized this past offseason, however, his ultimate goal remains winning a Super Bowl.
