Not everyone with remaining eligibility opt to return to college. And such is the case for a Michigan football team captain who was thought to return for another year.
Named a team captain in his senior year, German-born tight end Marlin Klein had two seasons starting for the Wolverines and had 37 catches for 347 yards and one touchdown. Klein said after Sherrone Moore's firing, in an appearance before the media in anticipation of the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, that he would either return to Michigan or try his hand at the NFL.

He was thought likely to return for his final remaining season of eligibility, but according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, he's declaring for the 2026 NFL draft.
With Klein departing, Michigan football will need Hogan Hansen not only to return, but to return healthy. Zack Marshall and Deakon Tonielli spent most of 2025 picking up the slack with Klein being injured throughout much of the year.
Michigan has a couple of younger tight ends, as well, and only one new face coming in, Mason Bonner, as the top TE in the 2026 class, Matt Ludwig, ended up flipping to Texas Tech following Sherrone Moore's firing.
