Man United plan takes shape at Elland Road
Man United head to Elland Road on Sunday with Ruben Amorim facing familiar tactical questions and familiar limitations. Leeds provide a fierce test in front of a hostile crowd, and the Portuguese coach looks set to trust the structure that has defined most of his early Premier League tenure.

Despite experimenting with a 4-2-3-1 in the 1-0 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day, Amorim returned to a back three for the 1-1 draw with Wolves. That decision, he explained, was rooted in opponent-specific detail rather than uncertainty.
“No, we knew that they will play with a five,” Amorim told reporters.
“They will use the width. And, today, was just to do that and then sometimes building up with him open or closed with Luke Shaw doing the opposite.
“So, we try to arrange the right situations for the situation that we have in the moment.”
With Leeds manager Daniel Farke also favouring a back three, the logic points firmly towards continuity rather than another reshuffle.

System continuity favoured by Amorim
For Man United, this is about control as much as shape. Amorim has shown a willingness to adapt within matches, but his broader framework remains consistent. Against Leeds, a side built on intensity and wide overloads, mirroring the structure makes strategic sense.
Elland Road has a habit of amplifying chaos, and Amorim’s preference for balance over spectacle could be decisive. Expect United to prioritise spacing, circulation, and patience rather than chasing early dominance.
Defensive rotation under scrutiny
Personnel changes, however, remain likely. Lisandro Martinez has only recently returned from a lengthy layoff and has played twice in quick succession. That opens the door for Leny Yoro, who could be handed a start to manage minutes without sacrificing physicality.

Options are thin at the back. Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined, while Noussair Mazraoui is unavailable due to AFCON commitments. In that context, rotation becomes necessity rather than luxury.
Injury list shapes attacking choices
Further forward, Amorim’s hand is largely forced. He has already confirmed that no injured players are expected back for Leeds. Captain Bruno Fernandes is absent, alongside Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo, leaving midfield depth stretched.

The continued absence of Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo also affects attacking flexibility. As a result, Joshua Zirkzee is in line for another start, even after being withdrawn at half time against Wolves. It may not be ideal, but for Man United this weekend, pragmatism outweighs perfection.
