LSU football will lose a key defender to the transfer portal. According to reports, safety DaShawn Spears is planning to enter the portal when it opens on Friday. The news was reported by CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz and On3's Pete Nakos.
Spears was a rotational piece for LSU's secondary in 2025, but he made an impact when he was on the field. In 255 snaps, Spears posted a 90.6 PFF defensive grade -- one of the best marks in the SEC. Spears picked off two passes, both against Florida. He allowed just nine catches and made 10 stops, per PFF.

Spears added three pressures and a sack.
Spears was a blue-chip recruit in 2024 and saw time as a true freshman. He took a step forward in 2025 and looked to have a bright future. With AJ Haulcy off to the NFL, Spears looked primed to play a pivotal role on the 2026 defense.
Several LSU players have announced their intentions to enter the portal, but Spears is the most impactful loss thus far. Spears is a young player with talent who's already proven he can play at a high level. He'll be one of the top ranked safeties in the transfer portal.
