LSU football quarterback transfers to AAC program

Former LSU football quarterback Michael Van Buren entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last week, solidifying the rumors that he will not be in the running for the starting job under LSU’s new coaching staff next season. Van Buren committed to play for the University of South Florida on Wednesday afternoon, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Despite a strong finish to his time at LSU — 267 passing yards and three touchdowns against Houston in the Texas Bowl — Van Buren’s time in Baton Rouge is over.

USF landed another quarterback in the transfer portal on Tuesday, signing former Florida State and Mississippi State quarterback Luke Kromenhoek. 247Sports ranks Kromenhoek as the higher-rated transfer prospect, placing him 21st among quarterbacks in the portal, while Van Buren is 48th. Still, Van Buren has far more experience, with 12 career starts to Kromenhoek’s two.

It will be interesting to follow how things unfold for Van Buren over the next couple of years at USF. The program has been on a very positive trajectory for the past few years, a trend that feels likely to continue despite the Bulls’ head coach, Alex Golesh, taking the head job at Auburn.

Van Buren didn’t exactly step into a great situation at LSU this season, with a young, struggling offensive line and a highly unstable situation at play-caller. Hopefully, USF’s new head coach, Brian Hartline, can help Van Buren reach the potential he’s struggled to find over his first couple of seasons.
