Over the last few weeks, Texas Longhorns football has lost key starters to the transfer portal and the NFL Draft. While they have a busy offseason ahead, fans let out a sigh of relief on Thursday. The Longhorns reportedly signed Alex January for the 2026 season, ensuring an important veteran will return for at least one more run.
During the 2025 campaign, January recorded 19 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. He also added one fumble recovery and one pass breakup to his resume. While Duncanville High Alum battled injuries that limited him to 10 games, he was a productive player whenever he was on the field.
Through his first two seasons as a Longhorn, January has 22 total tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. In that stretch, he has made six starts and seen his playing time steadily increase while helping the Longhorns chase a national title. When the 2026 season begins, he will be looking to take his game to another level.

Although January will have to battle for playing time, he has proven he can hold his own in the SEC. His play did not go unnoticed as Trevor Goosby and fellow defensive lineman Hero Kanu had positive things to say about January over the last month. For the Longhorns, that is an encouraging sign as they begin shifting their focus to the transfer portal.
Regardless of what changes are made, January will be an important depth piece for the Longhorns when they are back in action. In just a few months, they will welcome a top-ten recruiting class to campus, which should put less pressure on January. If he can stay healthy, he should be able to build on his success from the 2025 campaign and set new career highs.
