Lions' OC search reportedly begins with former Detroit QB David Blough

On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions made an expected announcement that the franchise had parted ways with offensive coordinator John Morton after just the lone season where Morton served in the role.

With Morton fired, it jumpstarts a search for the Lions to identify its next offensive coordinator. On Tuesday evening, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Lions have started their offensive coordinator search with one of its former quarterbacks, David Blough, as a candidate.

Blough just finished his second season as the Washington Commanders' assistant quarterbacks coach. When Tavita Pritchard vacated his role with the Commanders to become Stanford's next head football coach, Blough stepped in and took over for Pritchard as quarterbacks coach over Washington's final five games.

Blough worked alongside Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels as Daniels earned AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, Pro Bowl honors and set multiple records during his rookie season in 2024. Daniels passed for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for an additional 891 yards and six rushing scores in 2024.

Blough, 30, played five NFL seasons, the bulk of which was with the Lions. Initially signed as an undrafted free agent out of Purdue by the Cleveland Browns in 2019, Blough was traded to Detroit before the 2019 season. Blough started five games in his rookie season during 2019 with the Lions, passing for 984 yards and four touchdowns.

When Dan Campbell took over as Lions head coach in 2021, Blough was one of the backups to franchise quarterback Jared Goff. Blough took just four snaps that season in a 44-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Blough was cut by the Lions in training camp in 2022, but rejoined the Lions' practice squad in 2023 before entering the coaching profession with the Commanders.

“I had kind of known before last season started that my body was starting to fail me a little bit,” Blough said in January of 2025 with the Commanders. “I had known that I had wanted to do [coaching]. I think when I was in high school, I said I wanted to be a high school coach. When I was in college, I wanted to be a college coach. And then at the highest level, learning from some of the great coaches that I've gotten to be around, this is what I'm supposed to be doing.”
