The San Francisco 49ers played virtually their entire Week 17 game without left tackle Trent Williams, who hurt his hamstring on the first play of the game. Now they may need to go another one without him.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday spoke with reporters before the team's first practice of the week and indicated Williams' status for Week 18 is still up in the air with the club still unsure about his return-to-play timeline.

"No, we're not sure how long," Shanahan said. "We’re giving it a shot for this week, so we'll see."
It would be easy to see the 49ers resting Williams despite the disadvantage they'd have against a very good Seattle defensive line. Missing Saturday's game may give him a better chance at being healthy for the postseason. It stands to reason that would be a greater priority for San Francisco than securing the No. 1 seed with a win Saturday night.
Shanahan in his press conference immediately after the game had good things to say about Williams' replacement, Austen Pleasants. He reiterated that praise Tuesday when asked again about Pleasants' performance.
“Played good enough for us to win," Shanahan said. "Thought he did some good things in the game, real good, in the run and pass game. So, he did a solid job.”

The 49ers will need an encore performance from Pleasants on Saturday night if Williams can't go. We'll find out more on Williams' status when Shanahan speaks with reporters following Thursday's session.
