Kirk Cousins on Raheem Morris, Terry Fontenot Falcons firings: 'Tough to see'

6 days ago 2

The Atlanta Falcons firing coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot landed with some surprise on Sunday evening, particularly given the team's four-game win streak to close the season.

Going 8-9 in consecutive seasons and extending the franchise's playoff drought to eight seasons — the second-worst mark of its kind in the NFL — likely sealed Morris' and Fontenot's fates. The latter held his role for five seasons without posting a winning record or playoff berth. Atlanta will now start anew with a coaching and general manager search.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins told For the Win he didn't see the moves coming when we talked with him on Monday for his Great Clips partnership with the company's College Football Playoff campaign.

We'll have more on that later in the week, but we wanted to share Cousins' thoughts on the impending Falcons regime change with you now. We told him we didn't expect the Sunday Atlanta firings, and he agreed.

"It's always tough, similar to your reaction [of not expecting it]," Cousins told For the Win. "It was tough to see. You're again reminded of how many curveballs get thrown in this league. I've had a few thrown my way, going back to tearing my Achilles a little more than two years ago… It is a difficult deal."

We'll have more on Cousins and his Great Clips partnership later in the week.
