Despite a steep spiral that has seen the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose seven of their last eight games, growing frustration from within the team, and a defense that has routinely struggled to stop opponents, head coach Todd Bowles appears to remain secure in his position at least for now.
On Sunday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Bowles is not in danger of losing his job, even with the Bucs’ recent slump. Rapoport noted that Bowles received a three-year contract extension before the season and is under contract through 2028, and that Tampa Bay’s recent success of multiple straight NFC South division titles continues to factor heavily into the organization’s confidence in him. Even a late push toward another division title would further strengthen Bowles’ standing with ownership.

Still, there are legitimate reasons to question whether that patience is justified. Bowles not only serves as head coach but also calls the defensive plays, and Tampa Bay’s defense has been a major concern during this collapse. Over the 7-game losing streak, the Buccaneers have routinely been gashed by opposing offenses, allowing well over 375 yards per game. For the season, Tampa Bay ranks in the bottom third of the league in total defense and points allowed, a troubling trend for a team led by a defensive-minded coach.
The issues extend beyond the numbers.
Repeated coverage busts, poor third-down defense, and a lack of in-game adjustments have fueled criticism from fans and analysts alike. Player frustration has also become increasingly visible on the sidelines, raising questions about preparation, accountability, and overall direction. While Bowles’ contract and past success suggest job security in the short term, the optics are hard to ignore.
If the Buccaneers fail to win against the turbulent Carolina Panthers and miss out on the playoffs after a 5-1 start, it would be hard to justify continuing the original path just because of an extension.
