Inter Milan Draft Three-Name Shortlist To Replace Veteran Goalkeeper But Keep Faith Until End Of Season

Inter Milan are already planning for the future in goal, with Yann Sommer expected to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires.

According to Tuttosport, via FCInter1908, there are currently no signs of renewal talks, prompting Inter to quietly prepare a shortlist of potential successors for the summer window.

Despite this forward planning, the club continue to place full trust in Sommer for the remainder of the campaign.

The newspaper draws an interesting parallel between Sommer and Manuel Akanji, the two Swiss players currently in the squad.

Both arrived in Milan amid a degree of scepticism, and both have since won over the environment with their performances.

Sommer faced the difficult task of following Andre Onana, whose outstanding season culminated in the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul.

While the Swiss goalkeeper has had a few slips this term, he was a key figure in Inter’s second-star Scudetto and another run to the Champions League final.

Inter Milan Use Akanji As Inspiration For Sommer Succession

Akanji’s path was similar.

Signed late in the window and at relatively low cost, he arrived during a summer in which Inter were linked with bigger defensive names.

Today, no one at Appiano Gentile is lamenting the absence of Benjamin Pavard, particularly given his recurring injury issues.

Inter have already decided to make Akanji’s move permanent, regardless of whether the Scudetto obligation is triggered. The situation is different for Sommer.

With his deal expiring, Inter are actively evaluating replacements.

At the top of the list is Guglielmo Vicario, followed by Elia Caprile of Cagliari and Noah Atubolu of Freiburg.

For now, however, Inter remain fully committed to Sommer. The Swiss connection is intact, and the club’s focus is on the present before turning the page in the summer.
