The Brazilian went down off the ball after playing a routine pass to Stanislav Lobotka, needed assistance from two members of the medical staff while making his way off the pitch, and was wincing in pain each time he had to put any weight on his left foot.

Neres had clutched his ankle immediately after going to ground, and it has since been confirmed by Sky Sport Italia that he has suffered a sprain to that left ankle.

The injury means that he will be ruled out of the midweek Serie A clash between Napoli and Hellas Verona on Wednesday evening. It is now a race against time for him to be fit enough to feature against the league-leading Inter in San Siro on Sunday, in what is being dubbed as an early Scudetto decider.
