The 48-year-old was asked if there is any truth to those reports: “I’m absolutely [committed to Newcastle],” he said. “Nothing has changed from my perspective. I’m 100% here, working as hard as I can, head down, ignoring all the stuff that you guys write, whether it’s good or bad, because it’s irrelevant.

“It’s about today’s work and trying to prepare the team as well as we can for Leeds. So, that will never change from my perspective.

“I think my commitment to my work and my job, as long as I’m happy and able to express myself in the best way that I can to help the team, nothing will change.”

Howe has been at Newcastle for four yearas now and was asked if he is going to stay for four more: “Four more games,” he answered. “You’ve got to keep hitting your objectives, you’ve got to keep hitting your targets, stage by stage.

“If you’re able to and enjoying it and people want you to stay then you stay and you enjoy what’s to come. Four more years? I don’t know. Let’s just try and navigate through this season first.”

Jacob Murphy was subbed off early with a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace, and Anthony Elanga has missed Newcastle’s last three matches with a knock he picked up against Chelsea. The Newcastle boss gave fitness updates on the pair.

“Don’t think Elanga is quite there yet,” he said. “We keep thinking the next game but it’s taking longer in the final stages. He won’t be long, but not this one.”

“Murphy has had a scan,” Howe said. “It’s good news. No major injury. It was probably fatigue. His physical numbers in the game were outstanding.

“I think he will be available [against Leeds] at the moment. It will be a late decision for us. Fingers crossed.”
