Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper received a long-awaited call on Sunday.
Seven years after his purchase of the franchise, Tepper is now the chairman of an NFL playoff team. His Panthers clinched the NFC South title, their first in a decade, this afternoon—when the Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales hopped on a call with reporters following Atlanta's win—which allowed Carolina, even at 8-9, to take the division off a round-robin tiebreaker over the Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was asked if he was able to speak with Tepper after the good news.
"Yes, we had a brief phone call. Between the two of us, our phones are getting blown up a lot," Canales stated. "When he answered the phone, I said, 'Is this the owner of the NFC South champion Panthers?' And he got a good kick out of that. It's about all of us competing every day like it's fourth-and-1 and having that mentality. But we had a good conversation."
The Panthers last reached the postseason in 2017, the year before Tepper's reign began. In the eight seasons since, Carolina has gone 44-89—without a single winning record along the way.
Nevertheless, Tepper has finally seen his Panthers take a real step in the right direction. So this time, maybe the drinks will be on the house!
