The upcoming 2026 offseason will be vital for the Kansas City Chiefs as they begin the journey back to the top of the AFC. A key component will be the quarterback position, with Patrick Mahomes rehabbing from ACL and LCL surgery.
A name that has emerged as a potential temporary replacement and backup is Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. According to Miami Sun-Sentinel reporter David Furones, the Chiefs are considered one of the top contenders to land Tagovailoa if the Dolphins choose to release him.
Tagovailoa was recently benched and demoted to third-string quarterback as Miami wanted to give rookie Quinn Ewers a look this season. After signing a $212 million contract extension in 2024, the Dolphins would need to use the whole offseason to make the tough decision on Tagovailoa’s future.

Tagovailoa led the NFL in passer rating in 2022 and passing yards in 2023, earning Pro Bowl honors in the latter. He currently ranks second all-time in completion percentage with at least 1,500 pass attempts. This season, he accumulated 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions as the Dolphins missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
