Former Orlando Pirates star encourages Mosimane to coach Mamelodi Sundowns!
Lebohang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena, the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, has weighed in on the growing speculation linking his former coach Pitso Mosimane with a sensational return to the Chloorkop giants.
The topic arises as Mosimane finds himself without a managerial role a year after his departure from Iranian side Esteghlal FC. Despite a glittering legacy at Sundowns, followed by continental glory with Al Ahly and a successful promotion campaign with Al Ahli Saudi, his recent ventures in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran have not yielded similar success. Nevertheless, his stature keeps him in the conversation for top jobs, with a potential Sundowns reunion now sparking debate.

Mokoena, speaking on the Soccerbeat platform, acknowledged the complex dynamics at play, particularly the power of the Sundowns fanbase. "Mostly, the fans are not convinced. You must know that Sundowns fans have the power as well to say this coach is not good enough for us," he stated, referring to the current sentiment under coach Rulani Mokwena. He suggested that a sudden change would be harsh, but "if it happens as the season progresses, it will be understandable. The fans want the shoe-shine piano."
Elaborating on the discontent, Mokoena pointed to broader issues within the camp. "They are tired of what they are watching which is not so convincing in their eyes. Certain players as well are not being given opportunities. There is a lot going on behind the scenes, some players are not happy with the coach." While the management's stance remains unclear, Mokoena confirmed that "definitely, mdala [Mosimane] is a candidate."
Personally, the former midfielder expressed enthusiasm for the prospect. "I’m excited [about Mosimane to Sundowns talk], for me it’s always good to see one of the coaches who has done so much, not only for Sundowns but South African football and putting us on the map out there," he said, highlighting Mosimane's enriched pedigree. "His experience outside the country, he has worked with a lot of players, he knows a lot of things. I feel the competition in the league in terms of the battle of coaches, the press conferences, the post-match interviews, the tactics, mind games."
Mokoena's comments paint a picture of a club at a potential crossroads, with a legendary former coach waiting in the wings, fan pressure mounting, and the promise of a tactical renaissance stirring excitement.
