One of Penn State's young running backs will move on from the program after two seasons, according to a report on Friday.
Redshirt freshman Corey Smith is the latest Nittany Lion to enter the portal, according to ESPN. A former 4-star recruit, Smith played in six career games at Penn State, rushing for 182 yards on 36 total carries. Smith had an opportunity to stake his claim for more playing time during the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson, though he was out-rushed by Quinton Martin Jr. and Tikey Hayes.

Penn State's running back room will look much different in 2026, as the team will say farewell to senior rushing duo Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton, who both declared for the NFL draft. Redshirt sophomore Cam Wallace also entered the portal, meaning the team's most experienced backs will all likely play for new teams next year.
The good news for the Nittany Lions is that they have plenty of talent waiting in the wings. Martin flashed his potential with a 100-yard game against Clemson, while Hayes and Jabree Coleman are both former 4-star recruits who could be difference makers next year.
If head coach Matt Campbell wants to add to his running back room, he could look at some of his former players at Iowa State. Juniors Carson Hansen and Abu Sama III, who combined for 1,684 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns last season, both entered the transfer portal. Both backs would be a proven commodity who could potentially serve as a one-year solution for the program at the running back position.
