Fancy Head Coaching Door May Have Opened for Brian Flores

NFL teams are lining up to speak with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, at least in theory, but a new spot makes all the sense in the world for the defensive boss. The Baltimore Ravens fired John Harbaugh on Tuesday after 18 seasons, and Vikings fans should prepare for Flores to command interest from that organziation.

Baltimore’s opening creates a clean, logical path for Flores, and the Vikings may lose their defensive coordinator.

Flores is said to have strict criteria for a head coaching post. The Ravens meet it.

Harbaugh’s Exit Creates a Clear Lane for Flores in Baltimore

Flores to Baltimore would not be strange at all. Not one bit.

It’s the end of an era in Baltimore.

NFL.com‘s Bobby Kownack wrote, “A missed 44-yard field goal on the final play of the 2025 regular season will mark the end for one of the NFL’s longest-tenured head coaches. The Baltimore Ravens have fired John Harbaugh after narrowly failing to clinch the AFC North and a playoff spot that went with it in his 18th season with the team, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.”

“Harbaugh, who took over the Ravens in 2008, ends his storied run helming the club with a 180-113 regular-season record, having reached 12 playoffs, four AFC title games and won Super Bowl XLVII. He leaves the winningest coach in franchise history by 100 victories.”

Harbaugh’s agent claimed seven teams reached out to him after the termination, and coincidentally, exactly seven teams are currently in the market for a new head coach. Funny how that works.

“The Right Opportunity” per Flores

How does Flores fit? Easy — he’s searching for a stable spot with his head coach dreams, and they arguably don’t get much more stable than the Ravens.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported in November 2024 that Flores would only depart Minnesota in the 2025 offseason for “the right opportunity.”

And one year ago, ESPN’s Kevin Seifert tweeted about Flores’ press conference, “Brian Flores is gracefully taking a lot of questions about his head coach prospects. He said he will take every interview that is requested. Asked if he is interested in the Patriots job, he said: ‘I would say yes.’ But he added ‘it’s not up to me’ if they want to talk.”

Flores appeared to be weeding out franchises that are known for poor treatment and coaching instability. For example, the Las Vegas Raiders have employed five head coaches in 2021. That vacant position may not be a wise fit for Flores’ criteria.

The Ravens, conversely, are the opposite. Harbaugh held the job for nearly two decades. This may be exactly what Flores is seeking. The stars are aligning for Flores and his “stable organization” request.

Inheriting Talent Galore

Meanwhile, Flores would get off to a better start than most in Baltimore. He won’t join a team searching for a quarterback solution, as is the case for the aforementioned Raiders, Cleveland Browns, and perhaps Arizona Cardinals.

The Ravens have a turnkey roster. All Flores has to do is show up and do Floresian things. Most freshly-hired head coaches don’t show up to the job on Day One and have these players at their disposal:

Zay Flowers
Kyle Hamilton
Derrick Henry
Lamar Jackson
Travis Jones
Roquan Smith
Ronnie Staley

Especially for a defense-first head coach, the puzzle starts at quarterback, and with Jackson, Flores should be set for the next half-decade.

CBS Sports‘ Zachary Pereles wrote Tuesday about Flores and Baltimore, “Jackson’s injuries and ensuing level of play were the face of the Ravens’ disappointment, but the defense’s nosedive was no less to blame. Only the Cincinnati Bengals allowed more plays of 20-plus yards this season, and only two teams had fewer sacks.”

“The answer, potentially? A coordinator whose defenses have long caused as much havoc as any. Flores, 44, led yet another strong Minnesota defense in 2025; the Vikings finished third in total defense and seventh in scoring defense. In six seasons as either coach or defensive coordinator, Flores has fielded five top-half scoring defenses, three in the top 10.”

A Chance to Stay in One Spot

If Flores plays his cards right, he can earn the Ravens job and just stay there indefinitely. Baltimore doesn’t have a long history of losing — like ever — as other open coaching jobs bring at the moment. Like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Green Bay Packers, for example, in modern history, the Ravens are always relevant and never rebuild.

Theoretically, Flores won’t have to deal with the nefarious tomfoolery that he encountered in Miami. Baltimore’s culture does not crave head coach turnover.

While the Ravens’ front office doesn’t have direct ties to Flores, as the Raiders and Tom Brady might, Flores landing in Baltimore is really the perfect fit.

And if Flores accepts a head coaching job, the Vikings could end up grabbing two 3rd-Round compensatory draft picks in 2027. The verdict is still out on that development, as Flores’ contract will expire in March.
