Things didn't exactly go as planned for Michigan football in 2024. Coming off a national championship, former head coach Jim Harbaugh made a late departure for the NFL, and thus, quarterback J.J. McCarthy declared for the NFL draft. But that left now-former head coach Sherrone Moore scrambling.
The plan was to start Jack Tuttle, but Tuttle had an upper-body injury that never quite healed. And thus, the quarterback competition came down to Davis Warren and Alex Orji, with Orji being perceived as the favorite. However, it was Warren who ended up getting the start in the first three games of the season.

It was a bit of a mixed bag, with Warren going 48-for-72 (a respectable number) but with just 444 yards with two touchdowns, and six interceptions. However, when Orji and Tuttle both struggled, Warren was reinstated as the starter, and he had five touchdowns to three interceptions to close out the year -- including wins over Ohio State and Alabama.
He tore his ACL in the Alabama game and ultimately sat out all of 2025, entering the transfer portal at the end of the year. And now, per ESPN's Pete Thamel, Warren is on his way to Stanford.
While Warren's football accolades are one thing, he's also known for having won his battle against Leukemia -- a battle that many lose. Even still, the promising quarterback from Southern California persevered and ultimately walked on at Michigan.

With his departure, the Wolverines have but four quarterbacks remaining on the roster -- Bryce Underwood, Chase Herbstreit, and true freshmen Brady Smigiel and Tommy Carr.
