Colorado football top cornerback to enter NCAA transfer portal

Colorado cornerback DJ McKinney plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Friday, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3.

McKinney struggled in 2025 after a fantastic 2024 season across from Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. The Oklahoma State transfer came in 2025 as the Buffaloes' top cornerback, but his play regressed.

Many people around the program believed McKinney was an ideal candidate to transfer, and now that appears to be the case. With a better season, he was likely to move on to the NFL, but that will now wait a year.

McKinney finishes his Colorado career with 97 tackles, 14 pass breakups, four interceptions, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble.

Deion Sanders and Colorado will need to replace McKinney with a top-tier corner, as only Carter Stoutmire, who primarily plays as a safety, remains from the cornerback group.
