Colin Cowherd buys in to Seahawks' Super Bowl LX hype

The Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl hype train is gaining steam, this time from Colin Cowherd and John Middlekauff on their Week 18 recap podcast.

Cowherd said if he had to pick a team to win the Super Bowl, it would be the Seahawks. Middlekauff, a former NFL scout, backed up the take by heaping on stats. He repeatedly used the word ‘control’, which was my top word for their performance on Saturday as well.

This is arguably the Seahawks’ biggest strength, beyond any unit or position group. Their ability to control the game of football is stronger than any team in the league. This is shown best by the fact that despite their 14-3 record, they’re a stone’s throw away from 17-0- with their three losses coming by margins of just 4, 3, and 2 points respectively. They stayed in games and played not-to-lose football in a way other teams simply couldn’t.

When you think Seattle has a weakness, they turn it into a strength. Early in the year, it was their linebackers and outside cornerbacks. But Drake Thomas emerged and Tariq Woolen turned it around to make those strengths. Late in the year, their run game was struggling. Then, they found Kenneth Walker III’s extra gear and got him and Zach Charbonnet’s split just right. It’s to the point that calling any major contributor on the Seahawks a Dud in recent weeks has been a half-truth.

As the Seahawks rest and recover for the Divisional round while the rest of the NFC playoff picture plays the Wild Card games, it’ll be fascinating to see if any team they play can come up with a game plan that puts them on their heels. They faced tough tests from the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers this year, but those teams will have to put more of their own tricks on tape just to get back to Seattle. The Seahawks have earned the respect of the media to pick them in big games by winning close ones down the stretch.
