Broncos LB Alex Singleton: "Let's Just Play All One-Score Games"

The Denver Broncos secured the American Football Conference West division with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs and a Los Angeles Chargers loss in Week 17.

It wasn’t pretty for Denver by any means, as the heavily-depleted Chiefs only lost by one score, but the Broncos took care of business and got some help from the Houston Texans as well.

Denver didn’t score their eventual game-winning touchdown until 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, a one-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Bo Nix to rookie running back RJ Harvey.

The defense did its thing, holding the Chiefs and quarterback Chris Oladokun to just 13 points. This unit thrives on big moments and besides losing two one-score games in Week 2 and Week 3 on walk-off field goals, the team is 11-0 in those games this season.

Broncos star linebacker Alex Singleton addressed his team’s thought process regarding one-possession games.

“Logic and the swirl of numbers through the years always seem to show that close, one-score win ability is not a sustainable thing each season,” ESPN’s Jeff Legwold wrote Tuesday. “But these Broncos don't care much about all that -- as linebacker Alex Singleton said, ‘At this point, let's just play all one-score games.’ The 2025 Broncos, with a title-worthy defense, are 11-2 in one-score games including 3-2 in those decided on the final play (four on field goals and one when linebacker Nik Bonitto swatted away a 2-point conversion attempt in an overtime win in Week 13). That mojo isn't likely to carry over to next season, but the Broncos certainly believe it could last into January and, they hope, February.”

This kind of success in one-score games isn’t typical and hard to maintain, but the Broncos have dominated in these games because of the defense but also because the offense has been able to build off defensive stops and stay in games.

Even though they didn’t win last season, the Chiefs were 11-0 in one-score games in the regular season and made it to the Super Bowl. Kansas City wasn’t as good defensively as Denver, but their offense was better than the Broncos’ current offense.

If the defense can stay healthy and continue to change games, who knows how far the Broncos can go this year.
