The New York Mets could certainly use a guy like Freddy Peralta.

The lack of a true ace is a big reason the Mets collapsed and missed the playoffs entirely in the 2025 MLB season. Peralta, the talented right-handed pitcher from the Milwaukee Brewers, is believed to be on the trade block.

But it sounds like the Mets and Brewers are at a standstill.

Mets reporter Michael Marino shared on X that there are two specific players the Brewers want from New York for Peralta: Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams.

Williams is a shortstop who is the No. 30 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB.com.

Sproat is the Mets' No. 5 prospect in their organization by the same rankings. He made his MLB debut as a right-handed pitcher in 2025 and had a 4.79 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched.

Peralta is in the final year of his contract, so that's what makes this trade math particularly tricky.

If the Mets were to trade Williams and/or Sproat for Peralta, the Brewers would have those guys for the next half-decade at least, while the Mets would only be guaranteed this one season with Peralta.

If they won a championship, it'd feel worth it. If they didn't, though, and the youngsters blossomed in Milwaukee, it'd be painful.

So for now, a staring contest. We'll see who blinks first.
