Boston Celtics surviving cold shooting with defensive acumen, says Joe Mazzulla

4 days ago 1

The Boston Celtics have had some pretty impressive outings so far this season, having pushed their offensive capabilities to the top of the league despite losing a large chunk of their 2024 title core in Luke Kornet, Al Horford, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis in free agency or via trade this past offseason.

But even as a team defying the odds to secure second place in the league's Eastern Conference standings, Boston has to find a way to win on nights when the shots aren't falling. In recent contests, such as their 114-101 home victory over the Chicago Bulls on Monday (Jan. 5) night at TD Garden. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla opened up about how his team approaches games when their offense goes ice cold as it did in that win after the game.

"The first thing we have to make sure of is that we know we have to continue to defend at a high level," said the Celtics coach.

"That’s number one," he added. "So regardless of that, I do trust in multiple guys that we have. I think I know we can get out of that whether it’s Derrick (White) or Jaylen (Brown) or whether it’s the other guys getting offensive rebounds and getting another chance for us."

"Why I’m confident is because I know we’ll compete in the defensive end, and that’s where it has to start."
