U.S. bobsled driver Kris Horn had a scary solo run down the track after his three teammates failed to make it into the sled during a World Cup event over the weekend.
The incident happened on Sunday, Jan. 11 in St. Moritz, Switzerland after Horn’s three teammates — Ryan Rager, Hunter Powell and Caleb Furnell — were unable to get in the four-man sled.

In video from the event, all four athletes could be seen running alongside the sled in a typical start. As the driver, Horn jumped in first, but the three others were not as successful. The bobsled pushers instead tumbled into the side of the track and into each other in a domino effect while the sled continued down the course.
Without a brakeman — who is seated at the back of the sled — Horn had no choice but to maneuver from his front seat position to the back so that he could control the sled as it careened down the track at speeds approaching 80 mph.
Horn, 31, began his bobsled career as a brakeman, so he was luckily familiar with the situation, according to The Associated Press. He represented the U.S. on the bobsled team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
The driver crossed the finish line unscathed as onlookers assessed whether he had any injuries.

As for the others, Powell told the AP that he was “a little sore.”

“I should be fine in a couple days,” Powell, 29, said.
X-rays for the three athletes came back negative, USA Today reported.
The team’s bobsled coach told AP that the outcome could have been disastrous.

“We are fortunate it wasn’t worse,” USA Bobsled head coach Chris Fogt said.
With one more World Cup race scheduled before USA Bobsled and Skeleton picks its team for the Winter Olympics, Horn is expected to make the cut, according to AP.
