Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has reiterated the club's hope that talisman Thomas Müller returns in a different function after end of his playing career.

"I would very much like to see him take on a role with us at some point in the future – an important role," Dreesen said in an interview with the t-online portal on Wednesday.

"He still wants to play at the moment, as he has said several times. And that's a good thing, because when you talk to him, you can still feel that fire to be on the pitch. He still has so much time ahead of him and he will always have a place with us at FC Bayern."

Müller, 36, played for Bayern over a trophy-laden 25 years before his contract was not renewed in summer. He is now at Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps where he will play a second season this year.

Müller was in attendance at Bayern's last home game in December during a visit to Germany, much to the delight of Dreesen, who said he only grasped the impact of Müller sitting next to board member for sport Max Eberl at a later stage.

"I think very highly of Thomas. He called me before he came to the stadium. And so I spontaneously invited him to the VIP box. I was absolutely delighted that he was there," Dreesen said.

"He knows how important he is to FC Bayern, and he also knows that our doors are always open to him. He's taking time for himself now, and that's perfectly fine."
