Ahead of their Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club, FC Barcelona announced that captain and veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had suffered a fresh injury.

Indeed, the Blaugrana confirmed that the 33-year-old will be returning to Catalonia after his injury, suffered during a training session, with Diego Kochen set to take his place in the squad.

Loan move in jeopardy?

According to Mundo Deportivo, the immediate future of Ter Stegen has once again been thrown into uncertainty after his injury blow.

The nature and extent of his injury have not been made public by the club, who only confirmed that he had left the training camp in Saudi Arabia.

This latest setback, coming just weeks after he had recovered from back issues, could affect his short-term future.

It is a delicate moment in the goalkeeper’s career, as he had been considering the possibility of accepting a loan move during the winter transfer window in order to regain competitive rhythm, also with the summer World Cup in mind.

Ter Stegen had already played one Copa del Rey match against CD Guadalajara, and Girona had emerged as a potential destination that could allow him to accumulate minutes.

Despite his initial reluctance to leave, the 33-year-old veteran was warming up to the idea of joining Girona, following talks with the Catalan club’s manager, Michel.

But the injury sustained earlier this week throws a wrinkle into those plans. Any potential loan exit this month will now depend on how he responds to treatment and when he recovers.
