Barcelona handed much-needed lift as key defender nears return for Super Cup semi-final

Barcelona’s preparations for the Spanish Super Cup have received a timely boost, with fresh reports suggesting that Ronald Araujo could yet be involved in the semi-final clash against Athletic Club.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan defender is in contention to be included in the matchday squad, a development that would strengthen Barcelona’s defensive options at a crucial moment.

Araujo is a part of the official Barcelona delegation that travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup.

While his inclusion in the starting XI appears unlikely, there is growing confidence that he could feature among the substitutes if his positive progress continues.

A much-needed return

Notably, the centre-back has had time to reset both physically and mentally following a difficult period earlier in the season.

His red card against Chelsea on November 25 proved to be a turning point, and the subsequent weeks allowed him to step away from the spotlight.

The Christmas break, in particular, offered an opportunity to clear his head and refocus ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Since returning to training, Araujo has been working regularly under Hansi Flick, and his response has been encouraging.

Although he was not risked in the derby against Espanyol, the defender’s physical sensations have been positive in recent days.

Within the club, there is optimism that he is ready to take the next step, even if that initially means a role on the bench.

Barcelona are being careful not to rush the process, as Flick and his staff are fully aware of Araujo’s importance to the squad, particularly in high-intensity matches.

Having him available, even as an alternative option, would add security and flexibility to Barcelona’s game plan against an Athletic Club side known for their physicality and aggression.

The final decision, however, has not yet been made, as Araujo is scheduled to train again with the rest of the squad, after which the coaching staff will assess his condition one last time.

Only then will Barcelona confirm whether he makes the definitive squad list for the semi-final.
